South Africa’s most affordable Higher Education Institution, Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology (RGIT) has won the National Business of the Year Award. This year’s ceremony was held on the 16 November 2017 at Emperors Palace, Gauteng and marked the 15th anniversary of the National Business Awards.
The evening’s most prestigious accolade, was awarded to Richfield before a host of business and government leaders, VIPs and media representatives. Also watching, via live social media updates, were thousands of South Africans whose engagement kept the awards trending for several hours.
Richfield is South Africa’s respected leader in providing affordable and technologically enhanced learning. Richfield began in 1990, as PC Training and Business College in KwaZulu-Natal as a small enterprise.
This was a time when hardly anyone knew the term ‘e-learning’, or how big it was to become. Since then, this pioneering company has evolved in tune with the explosion of digital across almost 3 decades, to becoming the knowledge powerhouse it is today, with 33 higher education campuses and 40 TVET campuses countrywide.
Having recently won several international awards in Oxford (UK), Geneva (Switzerland), Rome (Italy) and London (UK), ranging from ‘perfection, quality and ideal performance’ to ‘sustainability, quality achievements and technology integration’. It is therefore not surprising that Richfield has taken SA’s top business award for 2017.
For a decade and a half, South Africa’s National Business Awards has recognised outstanding achievements by companies. This year’s list of finalists exemplifies the phrase ‘the Oscars of South African Business’, which has become synonymous with the National Business Awards. Winners included Discovery Health, Woolworths, Rennies Travel, CTICC, Microsoft SA, LexisNexis, Mintek, Belgotex, Afrocentric Health, SMEC South Africa, Britehouse, Fedex, South African Civil Aviation Authority, Liquourice and Godimong Consulting Engineers.
Top Media’s CEO, Ralf Fletcher said, “In my 20 years of immersion in the science of business performance recognition, I have seldom seen such a powerhouse collective of innovators, job creators and drivers of the economy all together on the same roster. While host organisation Top Media and Communication’s use of integrated digital data analysis tools has grown exponentially since the inaugural awards, in terms of qualifying and ranking top performers in business, it is still professional, human interpretation of the data results by both Topco’s Research division and the Judges’ panel which informs final outcomes.

The recent report of the Commission of Enquiry into higher education and training to the President of the Republic of South Africa states that everyone has a right to Further Education. A large proportion of existing and future students are unable to exercise that right because of economic dire need. Richfield understands the plight of students and as such provides affordable education. Richfield has assisted well over a quarter million South Africans to graduate with sought-after qualifications to enter the job market.
Richfield does not receive any subsidies, grants or allowances and our success can be attributed to our staff who work tirelessly to thrive, grow and positively impact our educational landscape. Ramnundlall emphasised that corporate South Africa should start looking at institutions like Richfield to which they sponsor bursaries, rather than limit their choices to public universities.
